What is a Car Seat Inspection Station?
Child passenger safety (CPS) inspection stations (also known as “fitting stations”) are appearing in communities all across the United States. Although the concept of an inspection station for child safety seats is relatively new to this country, CPS professionals have been conducting such inspections for many years: every time a child safety seat is ‘checked’ by a CPS professional, a “CPS inspection” has occurred. The hard work and years of dedication by many CPS professionals has lead to the successful expansion of CPS inspection stations in communities throughout the United States.
Child Passenger Safety Inspection Station: a place where parents and caregivers can learn how to safely transport children by using the appropriate child safety seat1 or safety belt correctly; a one-on-one tutorial instruction provided by certified CPS technicians on the proper use and installation of child restraints.

In general, a CPS inspection station can take one of two forms:

Stationary

A permanent site where parents and caregivers can either routinely go or call for appointments to have their child’s safety seat checked. These sites can be established indoors or outdoors

An inside setting is often preferred because it is not affected by inclement weather. Inside locations could include a service garage at a car dealership or auto repair shop, a drive-through bay at a fire department, or a vehicle inspection bay at a local department of motor vehicles.

An outdoor setting is also possible as long as traffic safety and weather considerations are taken into account.

Mobile

In some communities, it is more practical to provide parents and caregivers with an inspection station that can be moved from place to place. A vehicle normally pulls a large trailer filled with the necessary equipment to conduct inspections. It is considered a permanent CPS inspection station if it travels on a set schedule to accessible locations where the CPS inspection is set up and conducted.
